Georgia's Outdoor Burning Regulations: What You Need to Know |
Understanding the Summer Burn Ban and Year-Round Guidelines |
Georgia residents should be aware of the state's outdoor burning regulations, especially during the summer months.
From May 1 to September 30, a burn ban is in effect across 54 counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett.
This ban prohibits the burning of yard and land-clearing debris to improve air quality and reduce health risks.
Recreational activities like campfires and grilling are exempt from this ban.
Outside the summer ban period, the Georgia Forestry Commission no longer requires permits for burning hand-piled natural vegetation.
However, specific safety precautions must be followed:
1. Fires must be at least 25 feet from woodlands and 50 feet from structures.
2. Burning is allowed only between sunrise and sunset.
3. The fire must be attended at all times until fully extinguished.
4. Necessary precautions should be taken to prevent the fire from escaping.
It's important to note that local ordinances may impose stricter regulations than state laws.
Residents are encouraged to check with their local fire marshal before conducting any outdoor burning.
