Historical Landmarks

“Every landmark tells a hometown story.”

The Griffin-Spalding Historical Society, in partnership with The Slave Dwelling Project and UGA Griffin, raised funds in April 2024 to preserve Sophie's Cabin at Bailey Tebault House, a rare surviving dwelling of enslaved people.

Preserving spaces like Sophie's Cabin ensures that future generations can understand the impact of slavery on our shared history.

The Slave Dwelling Project, founded by Joseph McGill, Jr., works to preserve and interpret structures significant to African American history with truth and respect.

They aim to change the narrative of American history, address the legacies of slavery, and promote education about the contributions of African Americans.

Thank you to Jeff Mattox and his team for their hard work on stabilizing the foundation during Phase One of the restoration.
