“Keeping Griffin buzzing with good vibes 🐝

Janet Harmon Bragg, born in Griffin, Georgia in 1907, broke ground as the first African American woman to earn a commercial pilot’s license.

Her relentless pursuit of aviation defied both racial and gender barriers, inspiring generations with her courage and vision.

Today, a vibrant mural at West Solomon and South 8th Street stands in downtown Griffin, honoring Bragg’s exceptional contributions to flight and her local roots.

Bragg’s aviation journey began at Chicago’s Aeronautical University in 1933, where she was the sole woman in her class and overcame significant adversity.

She later logged thousands of flying hours, her legacy soaring over Griffin’s history.

Residents and visitors can connect with this heritage, from the inspirational mural to sites like the Griffin-Spalding Athletic Hall of Fame and the new Our Legacy Museum.

Griffin’s stories of determination continue to uplift and encourage future dreamers.

Georgia residents are reminded of strict outdoor burning rules during the summer months, with a seasonal burn ban in effect from May 1 to September 30 across 54 counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett.

The ban, aimed at improving air quality and protecting public health, specifically prohibits burning yard and land-clearing debris.

Campfires and grilling for recreation are still permitted during this period.

Outside of the summer ban, permits are no longer needed for burning small piles of natural vegetation, but strict safety measures apply.

Fires must be set a safe distance from woodlands and structures, only burn during daylight hours, and be watched constantly until fully extinguished.

Note that local laws may set even tighter controls, so always check with your local fire marshal before you burn.
