Griffin, Georgia has long stood as a beacon of African American heritage and resilience, deeply woven into the nationâs civil rights legacy.
The historic Fairmont community, founded in 1927, was Griffinâs first neighborhood where Black families could own property, and soon flourished as a center for education with the landmark Rosenwald School built in 1929.
The city continues to celebrate its vibrant Black culture through events like the Black Heritage Festival, which began in 2014 and now features dynamic performances while supporting local arts education.
Public art honors notable figures such as trailblazing aviator Janet Harmon Bragg and Olympic champion Wyomia Tyus, ensuring their legacies inspire future generations.
Looking ahead, the Our Legacy Museum, opening in 2026 within the historic Rosenwald building, will further highlight the triumphs and enduring spirit of Griffinâs African American community.
Griffinâs efforts preserve local stories and invite all to reflect, learn, and celebrate this enduring history. Read More... |
